Palm Springs, Riverside County
The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians owns alternating square-mile sections of Palm Springs, a checkerboard that dates to the 1870s. The tribe also manages the Indian Canyons south of town, where streams support groves of native fan palms. On the north side, an aerial tramway that opened in 1963 lifts riders nearly 6,000 feet up the face of Mount San Jacinto.
